The ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam made its first appearance in Gundam Seed Destiny episode 40. This gold gundam was constructed on Orb leader Uzumi Nara Athha's orders to serve as the final defense of Orb before his death. It was given to Cagalli after two years in office to defend against ZAFT forces, which included the Minerva battleship, during the Second Bloody Valentine War. Later, when the Archangel ascends into space, she gives away the Akatsuki for Neo Roanoke's (Mwu La Flaga's) use while she remained behind in Orb during the final battle. One of the important characteristics of the Akatsuki is its Yata no Kagami anti-beam defensive reflection system which coats its armor. When fired upon with a beam laser, this special armor allows the Akatsuki to reflect the beam, thus rendering the attack useless. This is significant, for in the first war, Mwu La Flaga "died" when he defended the Archangel from the Dominion's Lohengrin positron blaster cannon. However, when Mwu attempts the same feat with the Akatsuki in the second war, the reflection system saves him from certain death.
